EGA Generic Medicines Award
Challenging Improvement
The European Generic medicines Association (EGA) established the EGA Generic Medicines Award in 1997 to honour exemplary efforts in research, publications and public awareness in the field of generic medicines.
The Added Value of Generic Medicines
For Continued Development of Generic Medicines
When the EGA Award was announced in 1997, the Association’s
Board referred to the ongoing debate about the relevancy of generic medicines
as compared to newer pharmaceuticals, and particularly about the costs to be
borne by society. “It is clear”, the Association said, “that
in the interests of cost-containment and public health, the development of
generic medicines should be promoted.”
Purpose of the EGA Award
The EGA Award is intended to stimulate that development and trigger
new studies. The twin aspects of such activities — improving the quality
of products and of pharmaceutical care — are
therefore reflected in the criteria for granting the award.
Dual
Criteria
The EGA Award can presented for achievements in improving pharmaceutical
care related to generic medicines. Prime considerations in this instance will
be cost-benefit analyses, as they relate not only to patients and health insurers,
but to society as a whole.
Alternatively, the Award can be granted for research
leading to the further development of generic medicines. In this case, results
are judged on the basis of the administration, packaging, dosing and application
of these medicines.
The award may remain vacant for any given year if the jury determines that no suitable candidate has been identified.
Nominations and Evaluation
Nominations for the award come from member-organizations and
EGA affiliates. They are judged by the EGA Executive Committee. Each nomination
must be accompanied by the appropriate documentation allowing the formation
of a comparative opinion of the contents, quality, therapeutic and socio-economic
significance of the candidate's achieven¡ments. The
research or study must have been completed within three years preceding its
nomination. A nomination must clearly state the value attached by the nominator
to the results obtained. All entry reports must be accompanied by a tranlsation
into English.
