IGPA

Ensuring access to affordable quality medicines.

IGPA seeks to ensure that all consumers have access to affordable quality medicines. To this end, IGPA works to promote international pharmaceutical harmonization and regulatory decisions in a way which will best benefit the public and strengthen the generic pharmaceutical industry.

The International Generic Pharmaceutical Alliance was founded in March 1997 and consists of the EGA (Europe), CGPA (Canada), GPhA (USA), IPA (India) and JGA (Japan). The IGPA has also granted observer status to the generic medicines association of Brazil, Jordan, Taiwan and South Africa.

The IGPA is principally an informal network of associations representing manufacturers of generic medicines. IGPA, through its constituent member associations, undertake relations with the ICH, WTO, WIPO and WHO.

The management of the organisation is coordinated by the principal officers of the member associations through an Executive Committee. IGPA’s Scientific Committee is responsible for the review of international regulatory issues and for the formulation of technical positions of the organisation. IGPA’s Intellectual Property Committee is responsible for the review of Intellectual Property issues and for the formulation of technical positions on these matters for the organisation.

Aims and Objectives:

The overall objective of the IGPA is to ensure that all consumers have access to affordable quality medicines. As a matter of basic principle the IGPA and its Member Associations will:

  • Support the development of international and regional policies which seek to ensure access to medicinal care for all consumers;
  • Promote balances and generic-friendly intellectual property rights in the pharmaceutical sector which ensure that timely access to markets is guaranteed for generic pharmaceutical products;
  • Encourage the scientific development, professional awareness and general knowledge of generic medicines;
  • Promote the global harmonisation of regulations relating to generic products;
  • Provide guidance to international organisations and national governments in improving the regulatory and legal expertise relating to the registration and marketing of generic medicines;
  • Promote uniform and effective GMP standards and quality controls for generic pharmaceuticals and their active ingredients;
  • Seek strict and effective controls to prevent the production and trade in counterfeit versions of generic medicines and original brand products;
  • Support the development of competition in the off-patent pharmaceutical sector; support the right of all governments to regulate their own substitution, prescribing and reimbursement policies.
