EGA NewsWednesday, 2 March 2005“Thankful for Generics”EGA Reception in the European Parliament Mr Phillip Whitehead, MEP and Chairman of the Committee on Internal Market & Consumer Protection told a group of MEPs and members of EGA Board of Directors at a reception in the European Parliament that “We are thankful to the generic medicines industry for their contribution to bringing down pharmaceutical prices.” He urged MEPs to maintain their efforts to ensure that the generics industry can continue to meet the increasing demand in Europe for affordable medicines Emile Loof, President of EGA, emphasised the growing importance of low-cost generic medicines in the current healthcare equation that includes rising prices for originator pharmaceuticals, a rapidly aging population, and a deminishing work force supporting health insurance systems. Greg Perry, Director General, underscored the need to ensure a properly balanced competitive, regulatory and legal environment for the generics industry to continue meeting its commitment with European patients and healthcare systems. Critical to the industry is the full and correct implementation of the EU pharmaceutical legislation adopted in 2004.
