EGA vows continued support for on-going international cooperation between generics associations through IGPA. EGA, a founding member of the International Generic Pharmaceutical Alliance (IGPA) maintains its strong commitment to coordinated action by generic medicines associations at intentional level. Greg Perry, Director General of EGA, stated during the recent IGPA conference in Monaco that EGA and its partner associations in the IGPA must be more proactive at international level in order to get the messages of the generic medicines industry heard and to help increase patient access to affordable medicines. The industry is facing major obstacles through the extension of patent linkage, international free trade agreements with TRIPs Plus clauses, increased data exclusivity provisions and evergreening of IP rights whch often covering products with little improvement for patients. This new push for greater market protection comes only 10 years after TRIPS and at a time when sustaining and improving health care provision is financialy becoming an impossible task for governments worldwide.
